Skills needed include the ability to play scales in eighth notes (quarter = 144) in keys containing up to five flats, using a range from low D up to the G above high C. Instrumentalists should additionally be able to sight-read in 3/2, 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8, and 9/8.

Each flutist will attend several flute sectionals and master classes. These classes will focus on the refinement of flute performance, including topics such as intonation, embouchure, style, finger technique, tone production, and articulation.
