Flutists will have the opportunity to work with chamber ensembles and perform with a large ensemble, band or orchestra. These will include ensembles with other flutists or with other chamber wind groups, including trios, quartets, etc.

Enrollment is limited to 16 flutists.

Placement Video Guidelines

  • Two contrasting pieces or excerpts that demonstrate technique and expression.
  • Piano accompaniment is optional.

Time: Do not exceed 5 minutes

Basic playing skills needed to have a productive week
  • Ability to play scales in eighth notes (quarter = 144) in all major keys, using a range from C below the staff up to the G four ledger lines above the staff, and a chromatic scale (same tempo and range)
  • Be able to sight-read in 2/4, 3/4, 4/4, 6/8, 9/8, 12/8, and cut time.  
What to expect

Each flutist will attend several flute sectionals and master classes. These classes will focus on tone development through extended techniques, and refinement of flute performance (including topics such as intonation, embouchure, style, finger technique, tone production, and articulation). Interested flutists are encouraged to bring their piccolos in order to discuss and work on the challenges specific to this instrument.
