A participant in the SummerFestival jazz guitar program develop their ability for playing the guitar in various jazz contexts. In addition to attending jazz guitar master class, students will have the opportunity to play in a jazz combo and/or big band, and take other electives.

Enrollment is limited to 8 guitarists.

Placement Video Guidelines

  • Play the melody and comp the chords of a standard jazz tune. 
  • If comfortable doing so, improvise a solo as well. 
  • Performing these items with a backing track is preferred, but not required. 

Time: Do not exceed 5 minutes

Basic playing skills needed to have a productive week
  • Know how to read basic chord symbols
  • Able to play barre chords all over the neck.

The curriculum is designed to help students learn and/or further develop their ability to play:

  • Jazz chord voicings
  • Comp chords in various styles and ensemble settings
  • Improvise solos
  • Play written melodies from notation
